It’s not uncommon to overindulge on food and drinks during social gatherings or when on holidays. While it can be enjoyable in the moment, the aftermath of eating and drinking too much can often leave us feeling uncomfortable, sluggish, and even guilty.
If you’re feeling this way, here are a few tips that may help you feel better:
- Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water can help flush out excess salt and sugar from your system, and can also help alleviate any dehydration that may have resulted from consuming too much alcohol. Aim to drink at least 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day.
- Get some exercise: Engaging in light physical activity, such as a walk, can help stimulate digestion and improve circulation. It can also help reduce bloating and boost your mood.
- Eat light, easy-to-digest meals: After overeating, it can be helpful to give your digestive system a break by consuming lighter, easily digestible meals. This might include foods like broth-based soups, grilled chicken or fish, and steamed vegetables. Avoid heavy, greasy foods that can further contribute to feelings of sluggishness.
- Take a probiotic: Consuming probiotics, either in supplement form or through fermented foods like yogurt or kimchi, can help restore balance to the bacteria in your gut. This can aid in digestion and help reduce bloating.
- Get enough sleep: Getting a good night’s sleep can help your body repair and recover from the excesses of the day before. Aim for at least 7-9 hours of sleep per night.
Remember, it’s okay to indulge every once in a while. But if you find that you’re consistently overindulging and feeling uncomfortable as a result, it might be worth considering making some lifestyle changes to promote healthier eating habits.
